Cocktail Piano Tips: Flat 5 Chord Substitution Dandy

“A Little Extra Pepper, Please”

This b5 chord substitution strategy will add some harmonic “kick” whenever you opt to employ it. Essentially, you are turning a given melodic note that offers no tension  into a b5 which, in conjunction with the 9 just below it, can give your melody an instant “facelift.” Ask yourself, “Of what root is this melody note the b5?” Then play the dominant 7th chord based on that root.  Thanks, Richard, for suggesting this one!
