Cocktail Piano Tips: Playing Pop Tunes

Left Handed Bassist

Allowing the left hand to take on the role of a bass player while the melody and harmony are shared by the right hand somewhat simulates a “mini band at your fingertips.” This can be especially effective when slash chords exist but the technique is certainly not limited to such situations. This excerpt includes a very active melody with slash chords. (You’ll notice that I deviated a little with that bass line… you’ll find yourself taking such liberty, too, at times). For melodies that are less active, consider incorporating the “third hand” style into your performance for added appeal.
